The University of Dallas (UD) this month announced plans to open North Texas’ beginning PharmD degree program. The Dallas-Fort Worth area, the fourth-largest metropolitan breadth in the United States, is the largest market in the country without an scholarly pharmacy program.

UD plans to ask conducive to pre-candidate standing for its Rather high school from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and expects to enroll its first class in 2011, following fitting approvals from ACPE as well as other accreditation and regulatory bodies.

UD has named salubrity sciences administrator and educator Dr. George E. MacKinnon III founding dean and professor of the pharmacy school. He times held leadership roles in the establishment and accreditation of two additional schools of pharmacy in Chicago and Phoenix, as well as conducted feasibility studies for schools of pharmacy at other universities.

MacKinnon has also delivered more than 200 presentations, written more than 60 publications, and authored three book chapters in the pharmacy and the health sciences arenas. “MacKinnon brings to this important position decades of invaluable clinical, academic, and administrative experience in the strength sciences,” Dr. Francis M. Lazarus, president of the University of Dallas, said. “His leadership will prove instrumental in building the creed of pharmacy and at the end of the day positioning it as one of the most innovative schools of pharmacy in the country.” Before his appointment at UD, MacKinnon was the vice president of academic affairs at the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.

Over the past 18 years, MacKinnon held joint academic appointments in medicine and pharmacy at dissimilar schools, charming in clinical practice, research, teaching, and academic administration. He has also worked in the pharmaceutical industry as director of wide-ranging health economics and outcomes experimentation at Abbott Laboratories. A six-month feasibility mull over led by outside consultants helped to determine both the need for a college of pharmacy in the region and UD’s unique qualifications.

As both Texas and the United States are facing a critical shortage in the number of licensed pharmacists to distend existing positions, the university will stop provide the shortage. Texas currently ranks 42nd to of 50 states in meeting the demand for new pharmacists, yet is the second most populated state. There are 95,000 applicants for only 10,000 first-year enrollment spots at pharmacy schools. The Texas Workforce Commission estimates the state needs 855 new pharmacists annually, yet Texas’ six pharmacy schools combined alone assemble 650 graduates each year. Historically, Texas has had to attract pharmacists from other states to fill vacant apothecary positions.

"I look forward to addressing the missing piece of the robust healthcare infrastructure in North Texas, in partnership with regional healthcare practitioners, institutions, and communities, and creating a patient-centered curriculum for our students," MacKinnon said. "This is a tremendous opportunity to build on UD’s national prominence and reputation with respect to student-centered education and the advancement of snoopy, caring, and critical thinkers to each its graduates."

The growing demand due to the fact that licensed pharmacists has been driven by a number of factors, including the state’s rapidly aging residents, the increased role of pharmaceuticals as the leading course of medical intervention, and the expansion of pharmacy services in retail outlets and medical centre settings nationwide.

In addition, licensed pharmacists are increasingly taking positions in settings, such as long-term care facilities, hospice care, formula emoluments management companies, clinical research, pharmaceutical companies, policy and regulatory affairs, governmental agencies, and mail-order distribution companies.

Pharmacists remain in brusque hoard across the country, solely in rural areas, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. With such a drunk demand, some retail and hospital pharmacies are offering signing bonuses and other incentives to recruit latest pharmacists.

Competition bulk retail outlets and healthcare facilities is fierce, and the on — salaries typically start around $120,000 — is high. To lure pharmacists, retailers are dangling incentives. For a while, solitary even explain recruits behind the wheel of a BMW, according to newspaper reports.

Behind the shortage is an aging population in need of skilled advice and an increasing demand championing pharmaceuticals that is solitary expected to accelerate in the years to come. Job growth - and competition - is also being driven by the expansion of retail giants such as Walgreens, Rite Aid, and CVS.

Though some pharmacy schools aimed at churning out more highly-trained professionals have popped up across the country, demand still outstrips diplomas. In Kaiser Permanente’s Northern California region, 8 percent of its pharmacist jobs are unspoken for, Frank Hurtarte, the director of recruitment services for Kaiser facilities from the Bay Area to the foothills, said.

Kaiser has 154 pharmacies in the region and filled 24.6 million prescriptions last year, according to its Web site. Hurtarte said Kaiser Permanente advertises in journals, gives referral bonuses, and offers signing bonuses of as much as $20,000 While the struggling economy has caused drug sales to dip, experts sway the long-term demand for pharmacists will continue. New pharmacy schools have opened in response to the high demand in the field. The United States now has 106, according to the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. Just seven years ago, the U.S. apothecary graduates numbered 29 for every million people. Last year, the number rose to 33 graduates per million, according to Knapp and others.

Next elasticity, Touro is scheduled to grant degrees to 62 Rather students, its first class of graduates. In fact, enrollment at drugstore schools has risen for seven straight years. In fall 2007, 3,956 full-time students were enrolled nationwide - hardly adequate to fill the 3,904 jobs vacant in January 2007 at retail pharmacies, according to the National Association of Chain Drug Stores.

To earn a doctor of apothecary lengths, students must undergo at least two years of undergraduate college surely incite followed by four impractical years of professional study, according to the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy’s Web site.

"With a tremendous dearth of pharmacists, there are thousands of students distressing to get in," said David Hawkins, dean of California Northstate College of Pharmacy in Rancho Cordova, which opened in August. Relying mostly on word of mouth, visits to area colleges and conveyance to its recruitment Web site, Northstate received 350 applications for its inaugural class of 89 students.

"When people graduate from pharmacy schools, they tend to want to stick around where they graduated," Hawkins said. "Hospitals in our area tell us they’re delighted we’re here. We’re here to generate some employees for them." Government agencies operating vigorousness facilities such as Sacramento County’s Primary Care Center find competing for pharmacists troubled.

The center fills 1,800 prescriptions a day, but every once in a while finds it hard to bring up to date positions due to the competition.
